The Workshops Rail Museum

Tours / Activities Ipswich

The acclaimed, award-winning Museum should be on every Ipswich visitor’s to-do list. Steeped in history – it was once the workplace of over 3,000 railway workers and visitors enter via the historic Timekeepers’ Building – it merges the romance of yesteryear with the exciting technological breakthroughs of the present.

The old boilershop houses the Museum, where you’re dwarfed by beautifully restored locomotives and carriages, and where kids and kids at heart will marvel at Queensland’s largest model railway featuring detailed real-life scenes of the state.

The interactive Nippers’ Railway will keep youngsters enthralled for ages with activities such as driving a train and collecting tickets, and a popular exhibit for older ages is the Diesel Revolution where you take the controls of the diesel locomotive simulator. You can also soak up the romance of a bygone era walking through an historic refreshment carriage, or peer into the opulent Vice-Regal carriage to see how the Governor travelled.

Heritage Railway Workshops tours happen twice a day, and the place is packed during school holidays, with the popular Day out with Thomas programs running from Boxing Day to mid-January.

Hours: The Workshops Rail Museum is open daily, 9:30am to 4pm. Close Good Friday, ANZAC Day and Christmas Day. Steam Train journeys are scheduled for specific days, contact us for details.
